Born into a family whose careers revolve around racing, it's no surprise that Makala caught the fever to want to get behind the wheel. She was eager but had to wait for clearance from the neurologist to race after sustaining a traumatic brain injury when she was just 4 years old. At age 8, Makala was allowed to get started in Kid Karts and instantly became a front runner with the other young drivers who had been racing for 3-4 years more than her. Makala ended up having a great rookie year and was awarded Kid Kart Rookie of the year at Whiteland Raceway Park, the first time in the 54-year history of WRP this award had been given to Kid Kart driver. In 2012, she won 9 races and clenched 20+ podiums in her Junior Sportsman rookie year. Makala brought home a championship and the Junior Driver Rookie of the Year award. The next year she continued in the same class but competed with SIRA, the Southern Indiana Racing Association. Makala continued success with SIRA where she grabbed enough wins to put another championship win under her belt. Also during the 2013 season, Makala made her debut at national track NCMP, New Castle Motorsports Park, where she was granted the KRA, Kart Racers of America, Junior Driver of the Year award. In 2014, she had a total of 8 wins but fell 39 points short of the championship. In 2015, she was one of two recipients of the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Project Podium Grant and in 2016 and 2018. She was chosen as a winner of a 2-Day School with Lucas Oil School of Racing and able to get her SCCA license. Makala is still competing at NCMP for some kart races, 2018 she will compete in the Challenge Cup Series, in a Formula Vee car. This will be her first season from karts to cars. Makala was selected as a runner up in Champion Parts "Search for a Champion" sponsor  contest 2017.
